Dell Inspiron Mini 9 – The Vodafone Netbook

Dell is a late starter in the growing trend of mini-laptops contained with its 8.9-inch Dell Inspiron Mini 9 (with a larger "mini 12" in the series). It looks much like any other Dell laptop – functional – and to some extent it is. There is nothing fundamentally new about the Mini 9, it has what most other 9-inch laptops have, in short, Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 8.9-inch glossy screen with 1024×600 resolution.

Size wise, the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is overall quiteimpressive. It is a hairs breath greater than the original Eee PC 701 and slim enough to weigh little more than a kilogram. This is easily the Eee PC 901 – our # 1 mini-laptop.

Connectivity has the usual bells and whistles, Bluetooth and 802.11b / g Wi-Fi, although the inclusion of HSDPA is a big plus. The only problem is that you are bound by a contract with Vodafone – there is no "unlocked" option as the Advent 4213, so far, anyway. More on this later …

Battery life, better than the 3-cells duringMSI Wind is pretty poor in comparison to competing products 6-cell Eee PCs and the like. Dell promises about 4 hours of battery life, reasonable, but not a patch on the same size Eee PC 901 In an effort to keep the compact laptop, the battery eats in the keyboard area wiping out the whole line of keys F1-F12 keys and leave the depth of the fairly flat anyway. The keyboard does not extend to the edge either, so it is not bigger, as it looks. Overall, both the battery and keyboardis somewhat impaired. The touchpad is nice, but with mouse buttons below, not to the side as the HP Mini-Note and Acer Aspire One.

Looks disappointing again, as with most Dell computers – or is it boring? The interface is boring and apart from the slight tapering at the edges – it is a box. And it's only available in black in the UK. Smart maybe, but for the consumer, a little more imagination would surely be grateful! This is particularly unfair because someMini 9 is in the States, appear with Dell Studio 15esque systems. Surely this would be down a hit – a hit anyway, compared with black, black, black. Rumour has it that a white but counts the ways.

At a price of 299 for the 8GB model XP (or £ 269 for the 4GB Linux) it is more expensive to think a bit what the sale of Acer are for, although thanks to Vodafone, you can use it freely on a contractual basis. The cheapest contract at the time of publication, is 21.27 pounds per month for 24 months -To put it bluntly and undo all Vodafone software marketing – your "free" Dell will cost you just £ 600.

Oh, and the download is only for broadband 1GB, enough (Vodafone claims) and 60 large attachments and 30 video clips, send 600 e-mails and surfing for 30 hours. And do not you dare try and take your Dell Inspiron Mini 9 abroad on Vodafone – £ 9.99 per 24 hours or £ 4.99 per MB, maybe put the money to better use.

On the subject of mini-laptops on contract, there isvery few companies offering services – the Carphone Warehouse, for example. Currently, the prices seem quite frightening, even if you do not chip in for the computer in the first place, and with relatively download speeds. Of this expected since more and more larger companies entering the market.

The solid-state memory and passive cooling (ie no fan) give a fairly quiet machine, a nice feature. The storage system itself is a bit on the small side 8 GB for the XP version -half for the Linux, Windows, and particularly after pre-installed programs will be considered.

Looks, keyboard and battery life concerns aside, the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is a very good computer. As much as we slam Dell, they are a reliable and trusted brand – this can only be a good thing when everything will be downsizing. But apart from the Vodafone contract, there is another 9 "netbooks, which are worth a consideration, and even 10 inch model in the same price range, namely:

– Asus EeePC 901 – Our # 1 mini-laptop
Acer Aspire One
– Samsung NC10
– HP 2133 Mini-Note

The Vodafone option is certainly worth looking at when Internet anytime and anywhere, though download speeds are somewhat restrictive. If you can make it work Moneywise, it is an excellent choice. But it is worth considering, carried away before you sign up for 24 months that some laptop manufacturers (Sony and Apple are the clear two) and cellular phone providereven hitchhiking on the netbook train jumped up – so better netbooks with 3G, "unlocked", right around the corner can.

Dell has managed to go and produce a big brother for the Inspiron Mini 9 – the Inspiron Mini 12th It is already in Japan, now in the United Kingdom with Linux hit, XP and Vista. The problem is that they try to run Vista with 1GB RAM and the same Intel Atom – awkward movement – Asus have their flagship N10 10-inch netbook on atom, with its big brother N20on an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Netbook Review – 30 minutes Test Drive

I tested from a low-cost netbook Lenovo the other day. Yes, I took Lenovo S10 out for a test drive for about 30 minutes. Here is what I think of it, knowing that after the short journey to the meeting.

She's Got The Looks

The S10 had to play so I was the black Ideapad S10. At first glance, the S10 is really sweet on the eye. I would say it is one of the few attractive looking netbook around. But then again, almost all of these good looking netbookDays.

While black is good looks in the department, I would prefer the red IdeaPad. Black is all too common a color for a notebook or a netbook these days.

Ladies, on the other side would probably go for the pink model. I understand that the pink model costs more than the rest. I'm not sure why, but.

Keyboard Usability

The very first thing I try out, wanted to get my hands on the Ideapad S10, was the keyboard. Well, Inot really big hands. However, since the S10 Netbook is a 10 ", I thought that the keyboard would be confined area.

To my surprise I found the keyboard sizing and placement in the S10 very useful. The buttons are not too small. In fact, I would say they are only slightly smaller than the keys on a normal notebook.

Placement of the buttons are almost similar to a normal-sized notebook keyboard. The only difference was the size of a few keys such as capsLock, Tab and move right. These three keys were a bit smaller than normal. As such, I missed them a lot of time when I was typing.

Among the reasons for missing the right shift key is probably due to the placement of the four arrow keys. The up arrow key is positioned between the right Shift and the question mark (?) Pressed.

I believe that if I fully use the netbook for a while, and I used layout to the size of the keyboard. Therefore, the keyboard is reallynot a big problem for the Lenovo S10.

Functionality

From what I can see in the taskbar area, the S10 unit had a number of software already installed. Some of them start automatically when Windows starts. However, I find the time to start-up took was pretty fast. I mean, my current Intel Core 2 Duo notebook starts slowly.

Browsing my current events in the computer technology has taken a while. Not really sure if it was caused by a slow network connection. I am alsoExperience in the spirit of a slowdown in Internet traffic, even with my second Co-Processor Core So, maybe it's a bandwidth problem after all.

How to run applications on this little miracle, I do not see nor feel any performance problems. However, I tested only regular applications – word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics and browser applications. Just want to use these apps regularly every normal person on a daily basis.

Not quite sure how to do processor-intensive applications would be based onthis device. I do not think anyone actually try to make any 3D images, or create a really huge program to this small but beautiful. They are better off executed on a real work horse instead of the S10.

What is my final take on this little performer?

Now, after the 30 minute drive, I would say that I'm really impressed. The S10 certainly gets my thumbs up for his appearance, usability and functionality. In fact, if I be in the market for a new computer, I would likelikely to get on myself.

With a price of less than USD500 (RM1699 at the recent PC Fair in KL), surely it is a pretty good deal.

Samsung N120-12GBK 10.1-inch Netbook Review

Design: The Samsung N120-12GBK looks like its predecessor, except it is stuck in a big keyboard with a 2.1-speaker sound system. The netbook is a matte black finish, reduction of finger prints and smudge-resistant tendencies. The keyboard has a tapered keys, with keys that are a little wider at the base and narrower at the top for a great experience with using the equally excellent touch pad that comes with a scroll zone. The netbook "S 2.1 main speakers are placedon both sides of the display, while the subwoofer is on the left edge of the body. Measuring in at 10.7×7.4 inches by 1.2 inch screen netbook offers a 10.1-inch LCD with 1024×600 native pixel resolution. The entire system weighs only 2.8 pounds.

Technical data: As with other netbooks, the Samsung N120-12GBK used a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor with 1GB of 533MHz DDR2 memory. It offers a 160GB 5400rpm hard drive and is on the Mobile Intel 945GM basedExpress Chipset with Intel GMA 950 graphics. The system runs on Windows XP and provides a VGA port, headphone / microphone jacks, three USB 2.0 ports, one RJ-45 Ethernet LAN port and a built-in card reader. The netbook connects via wired Ethernet, wireless 802.11 b / g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Features & Performance: The performance of the Samsung N120-12GBK hits some of the best netbooks on the market. With its larger keyboard and 2.1 speaker system, the netbookoffers a much better multimedia and typing experience to most other netbooks compared, and a respectable 5 hours and 14 minutes of battery runtime. Since the battery life test was carried out with video playback, the Netbook should be able to handle longer to other tasks. All in all, the Samsung N120-12GBK provides a great multimedia netbook. This makes it ideal for consumers looking for a stylish and satisfying mobile experience.

Overall both the battery and keyboardis somewhat impaired.

At a price of 299 for the 8GB model XP (or £ 269 for the 4GB Linux), it is expensive to consider a bit of what the sale of Acer are, though, thanks to Vodafone, you can use it freely on a contractual basis. The cheapest contract at the time of publication, is £ 21.27 per month for 24 months -To put it bluntly and undo all Vodafone software marketing – your "free" Dell will cost you just £ 600.

Back to the topic mini-laptop on a contract, there isvery few companies offering services – the Carphone Warehouse, for example. Currently, the prices seem quite frightening, even if you do not chip in for the computer in the first place, and with relatively download speeds. Of this expected since more and more larger companies entering the market.

The solid-state memory and passive cooling (ie no fan) give a fairly quiet machine, a nice feature. The storage system itself is a bit on the small side 8 GB for the XP version -half for the Linux, Windows, and especially after pre-installed programs will be considered.
